What "checking Wi-Fi availability" really means
When your Wi-Fi menu comes up empty, three situations can be behind it, each pointing to a different fix.
No Wi-Fi adapter to use. Some computers have a physical or keyboard switch that disables the Wi-Fi hardware. With the adapter off, the device cannot scan at all, so the list is empty rather than "nothing in range."
No network in range. The hardware is working and scanning, but nothing it can see is close enough or on a band the device supports.

Toggle Wi-Fi off and on
Turn Wi-Fi off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on. This resets the radio connection state without disturbing anything else. Reopen the list and let it rescan.
Restart the device
If toggling does not help, restart the device. A fresh start clears temporary states that leave the radio stuck in a "connected but scanning" limbo.
Restart the router/modem and wait for lights to stabilize
Then power-cycle the router and modem: turn them off, wait, and turn them back on, letting the lights stabilize before checking again. This clears the equipment side, which matters when the router itself is in a bad state.

Exact menus and icon positions differ by operating system version and device model, so find the equivalent setting rather than one universal path.
- Windows: Look for the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar area and open the network list from there. If it is missing or greyed out, check Network & Internet settings for the wireless section and confirm Wi-Fi is enabled.
- macOS: Use the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar. If it is not visible, open System Settings and find the network or Wi-Fi section to confirm the radio is on.

Routers broadcast on different bands and channels, and an older device may not support the band a newer router uses by default. Try changing the band in the router settings or check device support. Treat it as a possibility to test, not a proven cause.
