What November 27 really looks like across US stores
The date is set: Black Friday falls on November 27, the day after Thanksgiving. What has changed is the shape of the day itself. Walmart, Target, Best Buy and most large chains now keep stores closed on Thanksgiving, which pushes the in-store rush into a narrow early window. Kohl's and JCPenney open around 5 a.m., Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Macy's and Lowe's around 6 a.m., Costco closer to 9 a.m. with a membership card required at the door.
The better deals usually arrive online first. Best Buy has run its Black Friday online event from November 20 through November 29, Target from November 23, Walmart's main online drop around November 25, and Costco and Lowe's from Thanksgiving Day itself. Amazon spreads offers across the whole month with timed Lightning Deals. Adobe Analytics, which tracks traffic across thousands of US retail sites, recorded more than $11 billion in online spending on Black Friday in the most recent holiday season, with order volume peaking between 9 and 10 p.m. Eastern.
Two numbers are worth keeping in mind. Industry surveys repeatedly show that most shoppers plan to start before Thanksgiving week, and price-tracking reviews routinely find that a sizeable share of holiday markdowns sit close to the everyday price. The discount tag is a claim, not a fact.
Three shoppers, three very different plans
Sarah, a nurse in Columbus, Ohio, wanted a robot vacuum and gifts for two kids on a tight budget. Her mistake in past years was buying everything in one afternoon. This time she split the list: small appliances and headphones from the early online Black Friday deals, toys and kids' clothing during the actual weekend when toy discounts tend to bottom out. She checked one vacuum model against its price history, saw the "50% off" tag was roughly its normal sale price, and waited nine days for a genuine cut.
Marcus, in Phoenix, needed a laptop and a TV. Doorbuster stock is thin and he works Fridays, so he skipped the line entirely. He ordered online at midnight, chose a current-year model rather than a clearance set from two seasons back, and confirmed the return window in writing before checkout, since television returns often carry restocking conditions.
The Tran family in Katy, Texas, compared a warehouse club bundle against a big-box sale on the same size TV. The club price included an extended protection plan; the big-box price was lower on the sticker but added the plan at checkout. Texas shoppers also have a quiet advantage: H-E-B still honors local competitor pricing on identical in-stock items, which helps on kitchen appliances.
Where to shop, and what each store is actually good at
| Store | When deals go live | Strongest categories | Watch-outs | Price character |
|---|
| Amazon | Rolling from late October, heaviest Thanksgiving week | Headphones, tablets, smart home, robot vacuums | Third-party sellers may not match the return terms; check who ships it | Wide range, deepest on Amazon-brand devices |
| Best Buy | Online event roughly Nov 20–29 | TVs, laptops, monitors, gaming | Doorbuster stock is limited; competitor matching pauses during the peak holiday stretch | Entry-level TVs hit yearly lows |
| Walmart | Online around Nov 25, stores 6 a.m. Nov 27 | Toys, small kitchen appliances, TVs | Doorbuster quantities per store are small | Aggressive on opening-price models |
| Target | Online from Nov 23, stores 6 a.m. | Home decor, toys, apparel, baby gear | Popular toys sell out online before the store opens | Mid-range, strong on bundles |
| Costco | Thanksgiving Day online, 9 a.m. in store | Large appliances, mattresses, electronics bundles | Membership required; limited brand selection | Higher ticket, bundled extras |
| Kohl's / Macy's | Online Nov 23, stores 5–6 a.m. | Apparel, shoes, bedding, cosmetics | Percentage-off tags often apply to marked-up list prices | Best on clothing and home textiles |
Four checks before you pay
Pull the price history. Browser tools and camel-style trackers show a 90-day chart in seconds, and a model that has sat at the same price since August is not a deal.
Match the model number exactly. Retailers sell exclusive variants with one digit changed, which makes cross-store comparison impossible and hides a weaker specification.
Read the return terms on the product page, not the store's general policy page. Large appliances, opened mattresses and drones often sit outside the standard window. Many chains extend holiday purchases into mid-January, and Best Buy, for one, keeps a price-match window open on holiday purchases into the middle of January even though it pauses matching during the busiest days.
Screenshot the listing. If a price drops further within the adjustment period, that image plus your receipt is usually enough to close the gap.
Regional details that change the math
Four states have no statewide sales tax: Delaware, Oregon, Montana and New Hampshire. If you live within driving distance of a border, a laptop or a washer can be several percent cheaper across the line, which sometimes beats the discount itself. In the Midwest and Northeast, snow and ice around Thanksgiving week make store runs unpredictable, so reserve online pickup where it is offered and keep the confirmation email handy.
Search habits differ by region too. Suburban shoppers tend to search "Black Friday deals near me" for outlet centers and furniture warehouses, while rural shoppers lean on delivery windows and shipping cutoffs. Wherever you are, confirm the store's actual hours on its own page the night before, since individual locations adjust them.
Start with one category, not ten. Write down the two items you would genuinely buy at full price, set a stock alert on each, and check the price chart tonight so you know the real baseline before the tags start shouting. When the morning of November 27 arrives, you will be comparing numbers instead of reacting to red font.
